The Cover That Said It All: Burna Boy's I Told Them...

Released in 2023, I Told Them... was Burna Boy’s declaration that everything unfolding in his career was something he had always believed would happen. The title wasn’t a boast. It was proof.

Virgil Abloh laid the conceptual foundation for the album’s artwork. On “Virgil” (track 7), a recording of the late creative director captures him describing how the project should be presented:

“The CD cover should be like him peeling off the industry or something... reporting the news story that goes along in the theme of the album.”

That idea became the visual language of the cover, which abandons the conventional artist portrait in favor of a newspaper front page filled with headlines, layered imagery, editorial typography, and collage elements inspired by 1990s hip-hop magazines, music tabloids, photocopied zines, and newspaper culture.

The cover frames Burna Boy’s success as breaking news. Its newspaper aesthetic reinforces the album’s title, I Told Them..., suggesting that the achievements and recognition he long predicted have finally become undeniable headlines.

At the heart of the artwork is the statement, “DON’T COMPLAIN. DON’T EXPLAIN. JUST BELIEVE.” More than a slogan, it serves as the philosophy behind both the album and Burna Boy’s journey. It reflects a quiet confidence that success comes not from convincing others, but from believing in your vision until the results speak for themselves.
